In 1999, inventor Dean Kamen establishes "the Company," later known as Segway. The Segway Personal Transporter (PT) is unveiled in 2001, followed by its first production in 2002. The Segway PTs become available to the public in 2002, and in 2003, the Segway RMP is developed for DARPA. The years following see various innovations, such as the Segway Cross-Terrain Transporter (XT) in 2005 and the second-generation Segway PT with LeanSteer^TM technology in 2006. Segway PTs are used in the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics. The company introduces Patroller models for law enforcement in 2009 and is acquired by James 'Jimi' Heselden.
