In 1999, inventor Dean Kamen establishes "the Company," later known as Segway. The Segway Personal Transporter (PT) is unveiled in 2001, followed by its first production in 2002. The Segway PTs become available to the public in 2002, and in 2003, the Segway RMP is developed for DARPA. The years following see various innovations, such as the Segway Cross-Terrain Transporter (XT) in 2005 and the second-generation Segway PT with LeanSteerTM technology in 2006. Segway PTs are used in the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics. The company introduces Patroller models for law enforcement in 2009 and is acquired by James 'Jimi' Heselden. Segway's business expands with the Segway Experience Center Program in 2011, and robotics platform ARTI is launched in 2012. Ownership changes occur in 2013, and the company introduces updated products in 2014. In 2015, Segway combines with Ninebot, launching the Ninebot by Segway miniPRO for the consumer market.
